Project of the year 2009-2010

The “Smt. Sunita Jain Memorial Rotary Child Development, Neurology and Behavior Sciences Centre” is being established as a specialized multidisciplinary service at S.L. Jain Hospital as a felt need for the children. The centre has three primary aims the first is to provide assessment of child Development and diagnosis of development delay, in children from birth to three years. The need has arisen from the fact that child survival has improved sharply in recent times. This is large because of improved survival amongst newborns who are premature and or low birth weight. Survival does not always ensure intact survival. Rather with compromised neonatal services the chances of such infants being born with development or neurological deficits are high. Even amongst the intact survivors amongst such group of children the prevalence developmental disabilities and scholastic performance are high. In order to provide quality life and to minimize the damage already occurred to them, it is imperative to diagnose these problems at an early age and begin intervention at the earliest opportunity. The clinic aims to provide precisely this. It will enroll newborns admitted to S.L.Jain Neonatal service, assess them and follow those who are at risk for developmental delay or disability and impart appropriate intervention therapy.

The second emerging problems amongst the children are the behavior psychological and psychiatric problems. These are increasingly becoming common and are a major concern because of the marked and significant changes in life styles, stress on the parents, families and children. The children of today have to survive and compete in an extremely competitive environment. There is tremendous peer, parental and schooling pressure causing a variety of stress related illness. This clinic will provide this facility as its second other major objective.

Neurological disorders and disabilities are yet another major cause of concern. There are very few centers in Delhi which provide such facility. The center aims to provide this as yet another major objective.

Besides the diagnostics and therapeutic services for the afore mentioned problems the centre will also endeavor to organize continuing medical Education programme, workshops, conferences, training and research in this field.

The “Smt. Sunita Jain Memorial Rotary Child Development, Neurology and Behavior Sciences Center” is being development to provide all these facilities through a dedicated centre of excellence of a kind not available in North West Delhi, through specialists in different pediatric specialties. These will include pediatrician, Developmental diagnostics and therapy, Child Psychologist and Child Psychiatrist, Neurologist, Ophthalmologist, Occupational and Physiotherapist, E.N.T, speech and hearing specialists and special educators.

The change for the clinic will be graded as per the patient’s socio economic status and will include free services to the disadvantaged children and families.

The estimated cost of project is Rs. 10 lacs.
